Our dedicated team of sleep science coaches, engineers, and product evaluators thoroughly investigate hundreds of mattresses using our unique product methodology. Each article is reviewed for accuracy, referencing only trustworthy sources. Consistently updating our content and picks, we align with the latest scientific literature and expert counsel. Our top-rated mattresses have been personally reviewed and highly rated.

Chronic pain can feel relentless, and even with the help of physical therapy and a chiropractor, you may struggle with restless nights. But the right mattress can help! Sleeping on a supportive mattress can soothe chronic pain, stiffness, and soreness, making it easier to sleep at night and feel restored in the morning.

The wrong mattress can worsen chronic pain by feeling too firm or soft or throwing your spine out of alignment. Conversely, the right mattress can soothe spinal pain, relieve pressure points, and promote healthy spinal alignment.

Professor Dagmara Dimitriou states that, “There is a large body of evidence that a range of pain management strategies should be considered for the best outcomes. One such adjustment ought to include seeking comfort in the bedroom to increase an opportunity for better sleep quality, a common problem in people with chronic pain.”

Today, we’ve made a list of the best mattresses recommended by chiropractors. With that, we chat about what to look for when choosing a new mattress for pain relief.

If you’re specifically concerned about chronic back pain, look no further than the Amerisleep AS2. Rated Best Mattress for Back Pain by countless sources, the Amerisleep AS2 is awesome for back and stomach sleepers! Dr. Jordan Burns states “research has shown that firmer mattresses, like the Amerisleep AS2, provide pressure-relief support to help to reduce pain and keep your spine in a neutral alignment.”

The AS2 includes a 100-night trial and a 20-year warranty.

9.3 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 8 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 10 Cooling & Breathability

The memory foam top is swift to meet all of the back’s inward and outward curves, easing any pressure that can build up along the spine from supporting the body. As you shift and move out of bed, the memory foam is quick to rise back up and reclaim its original shape, preventing impressions that can affect spine support.

We’re not the only ones who appreciate how the firm feel of the AS2 is more supportive than truly hard. The AS2 mattress has thousands of reviews, and the most recurring phrase is “good support” followed by “comfortable,” and “holds shape.”

Here is what some had to say:

The Teachers: My wife has a bad back. Chiropractor said we needed a new bed. We found this online and took the plunge. After trying a lot of mattress store beds, we found this to be comparable to some double its price. I wanted the softer bed and my wife the firmest. This was a nice balance.

Brown Eye: We were in the market looking for a mattress to replace our pillowtop. Although my husband loved our pillowtop, I began to develop back pain & had to see a chiropractor once a week. My chiropractor suggested changing our mattress.. after some camparisons we decided to go out on a limb by purchasing one through AMERISLEEP. Our first nights sleep on it was great, I’ve never slept so good.

Tom: First, I love the bed 4/5 nights. I’ve had and used the bed every night for months. I’m mostly a back sleeper so it does wonders for keeping everything operating smoothly. The only issue is that the same reasons I love it are also the reasons I hate it those 1/5 nights. Whenever I do happen to roll over and sleep on either side instead of my back, I wake up the next day with horrible back pain.

The Amerisleep AS2’s breathable knit cover keeps air flowing throughout the bed all night. It doesn’t trap or moisture so hot sleepers can rest peacefully.

At the top of the AS2 is Bio-Pur® plant-based memory foam. Rather than traditional memory foam, Bio-Pur® doesn’t trap body heat, is durable, and is better for the planet. Still, it’s great on achy muscles and relieves pressure build-up.

Next is a layer of Affinity foam, which contains patented HIVE® technology. HIVE® is divided into five support zones around your head, shoulders, back, hips, and legs. It helps distribute your body weight to protect your joints and muscles, helping you sleep pain-free.

The base of the AS2 is made with Bio-Core® foam. Not only does it support your spine, but it protects your bed from sagging, lumping, or going soft.

Pros

  • Bio-Pur® foam releases heat quickly and conforms to the body
  • HIVE® technology creates five zones of Affinity foam
  • Core foam increases support and expected mattress longevity

Cons

  • Memory foam tends to cradle, some sleepers may prefer the feel of a hybrid

What the testers say: “Now, I’m a regular side sleeper, but the AS2 is a model built for back and stomach sleepers. This model is overall not quite the right fit for me, but I could see if I was the type to drift off on my back it would be supportive and just conforming enough to mold to my back’s muscles and spine. Still, I was surprised by how comfy a mattress not quite suited to my sleep style felt, leading me to giving it a 4 out of 5 for support and comfort.” – Dr. Jennifer Miller, PT, DPT, AS2 Reviewer

If you’re looking for a mattress for arthritis or joint pain on Amazon, look no further than the Zoma Start. This medium-firm bed is available exclusively on Amazon right now, and it offers everything the original Zoma Mattress has for a more affordable price.

So those budget shoppers and Amazon shoppers who want comparable features to the original Zoma Mattress for a better price should consider the Start as an alternative. The Zoma Start is backed by a 10-year warranty.

9.2 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 8 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Zoma Start has a relatively firm feel that allows for minimal sinkage, though its memory foam surface is still conforming enough to support most sleeping positions. The gel infusions and breathable mattress cover also ensure the bed stays cool and dry throughout the night, excellent for anyone in a warmer climate.

Reviewers rave about the Zoma Start for its pain relief at a value:

Zac: My wife has a bad back and searched tirelessly for a good mattress that didnt break the bank. So glad we found Zoma. We sleep SO well and the customer service has been incredible.

Zachary B: My partner and I struggled to find affordable memory foam mattresses. With back problems, bad sleep patterns, low budget, and a fear of fiberglass, our options were extremely limited. We were worried to take a chance on an out-of-the-box mattress, but sure glad we did. The Start mattress was the one we chose, and it’s great.

Xiao C: It’s of good quality overall. Came with proper packaging and easy to set up. It was a bit too soft for my back the first night, but after that I experience no back pain sleeping on it. It can basically provide sufficient support for any sleeping positions.

The Start makes a few simple changes to the original Zoma’s manufacturing process to cut costs in ways that you won’t notice when you’re sleeping on it. For example, the original Zoma Mattress features Triangule™ technology to provide zoned support to different body areas. The Start swaps this technology for one sheet of gel foam.

The Start also has a thicker support layer and thinner comfort and transition foam layers. This makes it slightly firmer than the Original. However, these changes don’t alter the comfort or support of the Zoma Start in a significant way. What they do alter is the Start’s price.

Pros

  • The materials of the Zoma Mattress for a more affordable price
  • Gel memory foam that helps keep you cool and comfortable all night long
  • Excellent for back pain relief

Cons

  • Basic mattress design with a slim profile may not meet all sleeper’s needs

What the testers say: “The comfort layer of the Zoma Start is cooling gel foam, thoughtfully designed to alleviate pressure on your lower back while also delivering temperature regulation throughout the night for a deep sleep environment. As I tested the Zoma Start out in the hot summer heat, I appreciated the mattress’s ability to stay cool as I sleep.” – Dr. Nilong Vyas MD, MPH, Zoma Start Reviewer

  • 8 Cooling & Breathability

Vaya engineered its main mattress to have a top that’s soft yet responsive, balancing cushion and support for a medium to medium-firm feel. People with joint pain can stretch out and have sensitive areas supported, limiting pressure build-up. The mildly plush cushion also makes it easy to relax and fall asleep.

People love the Vaya for back and spine support. here is what some had to say:

Erin S: Delivered easily, set up easily, quite comfy, made in America. I don’t wake up with a stiff back, nor am I sleeping in a sunken pit. Pretty good overall.

Cooper: I work with animals and have been lifting 100+ lb dogs for almost 25 years. Back pain wakes me up off and on all night and in the morning I am very stiff and sore. I purchased a $2800 Beauty Rest mattress in October and still had the same problems, PLUS, it was hot. I’ve had the Vaya for about a month and for the first time in decades I can sleep though the night and wake up with no back pain.

Tia W: It also holds its shape and has not sagged in the middle or on the edges. I have some back problems, and this mattress is very supportive on my low back and hips. It’s firm, but doesn’t result in stiffness.

The polyester knit cover of the Vaya Mattress is plush, yet wicks away heat all night long. Under the cover is two foam layers.

The top layer is Vaya Comfort Foam, a plush foam that contours to your curves for optimal pain relief. At the same time, it aligns your spine and bounces back into shape rapidly when you switch positions. This prevents motion transfer and makes it easy to get in and out of bed.

The bottom layer is Vaya Base Foam, a durable material built to promote healthy spinal alignment. Regardless of what position you sleep in, you’ll feel well-supported and wake up feeling refreshed!

Pros

  • Built to last a decade, though you’d never know it at this price point
  • Breathable cover keeps you cool and dry all night long
  • Simple design helps keeps sleep quality high and prices low

Cons

  • Simple two-layer mattress features comfort foam and support foam only

The Nolah Evolution features our HDMax™ Tri-Zone™ coils, offering targeted back support and responsive pressure relief. Meanwhile, the breathable cover, heat-dissipating Euro topper, and graphite-infused AirFoamICE™ provide luxurious cushioning and best-in-class cooling.

The Nolah Evolution has great reviews for pain relief. Here are some recent reviews:

Christopher W: This mattress changed my life. Prior to the purchase i was waking up with hip and back pain, at times 2 hours into my sleep, daily. Life was he’ll. I went with the plush full size option, normally I like firm but obviously I have no idea what i should be using because I was sleeping in pain.

Katie M: We’ve had our mattress for 3 weeks now. I have lower back issues and needed a new mattress after 10 years on our Tempurpedic. We tried a more firm mattress in a box different brand and sent it back. My husband and I are both under 150lbs and are side sleepers.

James M: We’re loving our new mattress, had it for about 2 weeks. It has absolutely reduced my hip, back and shoulder pain. The squish pillows have been great, too. The only issue we’ve had is that I feel like it sleeps hot, I’m much warmer than our old mattress, but it’s a trade off for the decrease in pain.

As we mentioned, the main top layer of the Evolution is AirFoamICE™ foam, a cooler version of Nolah’s original AirFoam™ comfort material. A quilted High Thermal Conductivity Euro top with cooling ArticTex™ fabric and a breathable border gusset completes this cooling surface.

Underneath the AirFoamICE™ foam is a supportive foam for added resiliency and a dense transition foam for buoyancy. These layers keep sleepers from feeling as if they’re sinking too far or trapped in the mattress.

The Evolution also boasts some of the most advanced edge support technology on the market. Its E.D.G.E™️ Rails wrap around the pocketed coil support core to prevent the edge of the bed from collapsing and provide ultimate stability in the middle of the mattress.

The Evolution also offers an excellent mix of cushioning and support to relieve pressure points and provide healthy spinal alignment. Its high-density transition foam provides support to the lumbar area and cradling to prevent shoulder and hip pain. It also protects you from potential pressure caused by the HDMax™ Tri-Zone™️ coil support layer.

Finally, the Evolution also comes in three different firmness levels. That means sleepers of any body type and sleep style can enjoy this cooling and supportive mattress.

Pros

  • Built to last a decade, though you’d never know it at this price point
  • Breathable cover keeps you cool and dry all night long
  • Simple design helps keeps sleep quality high and prices low

Cons

  • Simple two-layer mattress features comfort foam and support foam only

Hybrid mattresses, like the Amerisleep Organica, are one of the best options when it comes to dealing with chronic pain. The Organica provides excellent pressure relief while still supporting your back and spine all night long. With its medium firmness, it’s a great choice for all types of sleeping positions!

9.2 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 9 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Amerisleep Organica offers a responsive medium feel that delicately contours to the body in most positions. The thick wool cradles the body, while the latex foam layers and pocketed coils provide gentle support.

While nobody noted back or other serious pain issues, some noted moving the mattress was difficult, something people seeing a chiropractor should note:

TMK: I’ve had better sleep quality since having this mattress than I have in years. My husband, who has back issues, also likes the mattress and finds the softness/firmness level to be exactly what he needs. I would definitely buy this mattress again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a mattress made with superior quality and comfort.

Me: I don’t want to categorize rather I am mid or high end as a shopper because I want quality and a decent fair price but saying that, it’s relative to one’s own need and opinions. I am comfortable in my bed I seems a bit lower on the entry side.

Clarion: This is the first time we ordered one of these foam mattresses. It’s a fine mattress, but we didn’t find it any different than a traditional mattress and box spring. We are super-glad we didn’t go with Temperpedic, which at twice the price is likely the exact same thing. I suppose the fact that it can be shipped FedEx is handy, but our queen size was very heavy and difficult to get upstairs.

The Organica features a GOTS® organic certified cotton cover with hand-tufted rosettes. It’s durable, soft to the touch, and dissipates heat and moisture. Under the cover is 1 inch of New Zealand Joma Wool® batting to regulate heat and act as the bed’s fire barrier.

Next is 3 inches of Talalay latex, a buoyant and natural material. It cushions your achy muscles without leaving you feeling stiff or “stuck” in bed. Plus, Talalay latex is breathable so you sleep cool year-round.

The largest layer in the Organica is its 8-inch pocketed coil system. Each steel spring is wrapped in fabric to prevent motion transfer, noise, and sagging. The coils on the sides of the mattress are extra-firm to reinforce the bed and prevent the edges from going saggy.

The Organica’s bottom layer is 1 inch of Dunlop latex to protect the coils and ensure your bed lasts.

With the Organica, you received a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Pros

  • Cotton cover fabric with wool flame barrier
  • Latex comfort foam and transition foam layers
  • Pocketed coils isolate motion for greater comfort

Cons

  • Not for sleepers with latex allergies

What the testers say: “In comparison, the Oganica mattress is an excellent option for side sleepers because it’s firm enough to be supportive and plush enough for exceptional pressure relief. I didn’t have any hip flare-ups during testing. The top layers are also plush enough to contour to my body for side sleeping — another win.” – Sharon Brandwein, Certified Sleep Coach and Organica Reviewer

The Zoma Hybrid mattress contains a gel memory foam comfort layer and a Reactiv™ transition layer. The gel memory foam cushions your hips and shoulders to reduce pain while the Reactiv™ layer ensures you don’t sink in bed.

Under the two memory foam layers are pocketed steel springs. Unlike open or continuous coils, pocketed coils are less likely to squeak, springy, or cause motion transfer. It closely supports the spine, ensuring you wake up feeling restored and pain-free in the mornings. Beneath this layer is a durable foam designed to minimize general wear and tear.

Pros

  • Infused gels wick heat away from the body
  • Reactiv™ buoys the body and maintains lift
  • Wrapped coils ensure independent reaction to movements

Cons

  • Limited firmness options

Saatva offers numerous mattress models, but one of their popular options is the Saatva Classic. With a base of tempered steel coils and a mid-layer of pocketed coils, the classic is a good choice for heavier people and sleepers interested in a bouncy mattress. It has a specialty layer to promote spinal alignment and a conforming pillow top to ease pressure points that can turn into back pain.

The Classic mattress comes in three firmnesses, with customers able to choose a plush soft, luxury firm, or firm surface. All firmnesses contain the same quality materials and are offered at the same price.

The Saatva Classic mattress comes with a 180-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty.

The Saatva Classic has the bounce and support of a traditional innerspring mattress, but the luxurious feel of a memory foam mattress. The firmness will vary, but every Saatva Classic is still notably cooling and cushions achy pressure points.

With patented lumbar support technology, the Saatva Classic provides incomparable back support to relieve pain. It’s firmer under your back area to promote healthy alignment and keep you from sinking into your bed at night.

People looking for a more firm mattress with back pain also have chosen the Saatva Classic and have been satisfied:

Steve: I was torn on which bed to buy. We got to talking and I explained my bad back situation and she pointed me in the same direction as I was leaning.

Jeff H: After sleeping on the Luxury Firm mattress for the last 20 nights, my back feels better than it has in decades.

JLG: Having back problems we knew we needed a firm mattress if the first couple weeks of sleeping on our new mattress is any indication of the comfort and pain relief we’re extremely happy with the purchase. The quality far exceeded expectations.

Four layers make up the Saatva Classic bed. First is a 3-inch Euro pillow top for a more beautiful and comfortable mattress. The cover fabric is breathable, hypoallergenic cotton treated with a botanical antimicrobial treatment. The pillow top is designed to offer back and joint pain relief, easing tension across the body.

Underneath the pillow top are responsive pocketed coils made from recycled steel and wrapped to isolate motion. The third layer contains patented spinal zone technology. The active wire and dense CertiPUR-US® memory foam layers boost back support and increase pressure relief in the mattress’s midsection.

The bed’s enduring support is tempered steel coils for a sag-resistant surface. Stiff foams surround the coil layers, providing structure and edge support.

Pros

  • Made of organic, hypoallergenic, and antimicrobial materials
  • Built to ease back pain and joint pain
  • Features patented back support technology

While hybrid mattresses can be great, they often start in the thousands, making them unreasonable for most shoppers. But not the Vaya Hybrid. Starting at only $449, the Vaya Hybrid is another budget-friendly bed great for people with muscle or joint pain. It has a medium feel suitable for side, back, and some stomach sleepers.

The Vaya Hybrid provides a pillowy feel with budget-friendly yet high-quality materials. The mattress balances a plush surface with a supportive core. Sleepers can gently sink into the bed without feeling like they’re uncomfortably stuck, thanks to the bed’s reactive materials.

People who chose the Vaya do not primarily do so for pain, but there are few complaints from those who do, but off-gassing has been an issue for some:

Jacqueline H: Excellent mattress!nNo more back pain. I am so please we read the reviews!

Catherine G: Customer service was superb, as is the mattress. I bought a twin for a guest room daybed and now it’s my family’s favorite nap spot.

Francis R: After a week and a half of airing it out I had to spray with Febreze to get rid of odor and covered it with a mattress cover to keep my eyes from stinging!

Like Vaya’s flagship model, the Vaya Hybrid contains Vaya Comfort Foam. It soothes pressure and prevents you from sinking uncomfortably while you sleep.

Rather than a foam base, the Vaya Hybrid contains a layer of pocketed coils. The coils maximize spinal support while being resistant to sagging or breaking. Air can circulate in the spaces between the coils, preventing you from overheating so you sleep peacefully.

Beneath the coil layer is a durable foam base. The foam protects the coils, ensuring your mattress lasts for years without sagging or becoming unsupportive.

You receive a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty with a purchase of the Vaya Hybrid.

Pros

  • Breathable cover fabric for consistent coolness
  • Thick layer of pillowy cotton with comfort foam
  • Pocketed coil core with reinforced sides

Cons

  • No transition foam layer

Sleepers wanting an extra-firm memory foam bed will love Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank. This extra firm mattress is stiff as a board and perfect for those wanting a bed that feels notably firm.

The only other mattress Brooklyn Bedding offers outside of the Plank is the Plank Hybrid. Like the original Plank, the Plank Hybrid is both flippable and has a firm and ultra-firm mattress side. What makes them different is the pocketed coils the Plank Hybrid has versus the Plank’s all foam design. The coil in the hybrid model provides extra bounce and breathability, something useful for hot sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night sleep trial with their Plank mattress. And if you like the bed, it’s backed by a 10-year warranty.

On the website, Brooklyn Bedding describes the Plank as a firm mattress for sleepers who say a typical firm isn’t enough. (If you prefer some cushioning, or have pressure points, you’ll want to steer clear of the Plank.) Some people who will love the Plank include stomach sleepers, larger people, some back sleepers, and people who get hot at night.

We like this mattress because of its dual, flippable firmness. This means one side of the bed has one firmness, and the other side has another. With the Plank, one side is firm, and the other is extra-firm. Both sides have cooling technologies to prevent hot nights. Plus, both sides do feature a thin layer of quilting to provide a slight cushion.

Out of over 1400 reviews, the Plank scores a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Buyers talk about how sleeping on the Plank has improved their sleep and pain immensely. Plus, despite being so firm, the bed is still comfortable and doesn’t leave them feeling achy. The firmness also helps customers who share a bed, ensuring they won’t disturb their sleep partner when shifting or getting out of bed.

Here are some of those reviews:

Unis K: So far, it has met our expectations. I hope it stays the same and doesn’t sink. It is quite firm and very comfy. My husband and I love it. My back pain is gone.

Pulkit J: My parents started getting bad back pain.

Cory L: Still deciding on the bed! It might be a little bit too firm even on the softer side. I will let you know when I lay on it more thank you.

As we mentioned, both sides of this mattress act as comfort layers. Each side is a quilted top layer, with the extra-firm side having a 0.75-inch thick quilted top, while the firm side is a 1.5-inch quilted top, followed by 2 inches of TitanFlex™ comfort foam. The core of the mattress is 7 inches of dense base foam.

Each side can also have an optional cooling panel sewn on to better regulate the surface temperature.

Pros

  • Cooling features keep the firm surface from overheating
  • Flippable design lets sleepers experiment with preferences
  • Thick, dense base foam promotes mattress longevity

Cons

  • Firm feels only suit a limited number of sleepers with chiropractic issues

Types of Mattresses Recommended By Chiropractors

The type of mattress you buy affects how it’ll feel and perform, including how it’ll impact pain relief. With that, a mattress’s type plays a role in how much it costs and how long it lasts. Let’s take a look at some of the types of mattresses your chiropractor might suggest using!

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are one of the best options when dealing with muscle or joint pain. Famous for their immense pressure relief and “hug-like” feel, memory foam beds conform under your body to soothe your pain.

When shopping for memory foam mattresses, look for plant-based memory foam or memory foam infused with gel, graphite, or copper. These types of memory foam are more durable and breathable compared to the standard foam

Memory foam beds come in a wide variety of prices—both affordable and luxury—and last 8 to 10 years on average.

Latex

Latex mattresses are another type of foam mattress, only it’s more sustainable. Compared to memory foam, latex foam is springier, more durable, and ultra-breathable. It’s a good choice if you love the pressure and pain relief of memory foam mattresses but tend to get hot. It’s also a great choice when you’re trying to reduce your carbon footprint!

Although natural or organic latex mattresses are great, they tend to start at $1000 or more. Still, they make up for this by lasting 12 to 15 years on average.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are popular for their low price and recognizability. They’re made of steel coils that provide lots of bounce, airflow, and back support.

Most innerspring mattresses feature pillow top comfort layers, which are usually made from cotton, down, wool, or polyester. More luxurious innerspring beds contain foam Euro tops, which offer better pressure relief. With that, we recommend looking for innerspring beds with foam comfort layers when dealing with chronic pain.

Innerspring mattresses start as low as a few hundred dollars and can cost up to thousands. Regardless, they typically last 5 to 7 years.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are a great choice for people who love the bouncy feel of innerspring beds but are looking for extra cushioning. Hybrid beds contain individually pocketed springs and foam comfort layers for optimal support, pressure relief, and breathability.

A hybrid mattress usually starts at about $1000 and lasts roughly 5 to 7 years.

Consider Your Sleeping Position

Your sleeping position makes a major difference in your physical health and sleep quality. How you sleep affects the mattress firmness you need, also.

Mattress firmness isn’t the equivalent of mattress support. Instead, your bed’s firmness impacts how much cushioning it has. Your mattress’s firmness plays a major role in muscle pain and joint relief and comes down to your sleeping position!

“Finding the right mattress surface for different sleeping styles and body types can be difficult. Overall, research shows that a firm to medium-firm mattress are the best options for reducing pain and keeping your spine in a neutral alignment,” says Dr. Burns.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is one of the most popular and healthiest sleeping positions. It’s gentle on your spine, good for your breathing, and safe during pregnancy. One issue side sleepers may face is hip and shoulder pain, and even poor spinal support, so it’s important to get the right mattress firm level. Especially if, again, considering a mattress for pregnancy, when many are prone to restlessness from changes in the body.

Side sleepers do best on soft to medium mattresses. These mattresses for side sleepers provide ample hip and shoulder cushioning while still supporting the spine (Read more about best mattresses for hip pain here).

Back Sleepers

Back sleeping is another great choice when dealing with chronic back, hip, or shoulder pain. The position is typically gentle on your body but can cause or worsen lower back pain on the wrong mattress.

We suggest mattresses for back sleepers have a medium to medium-firm mattress to promote healthy spine alignment while still cushioning the lower back.

Stomach Sleepers

It’s unlikely that your chiropractor will recommend a mattress for sleeping on your stomach. Stomach sleeping is aggressive on your spine, inhibits your breathing, and is rough on your skin. It worsens back pain, stiffness, and aches, which is why most chiropractors will recommend switching positions.

Of course, changing sleeping positions isn’t always easy. If you want to stomach sleep, use a medium-firm to firm mattress. Firmer mattresses align your spine and won’t cause you to sink—which would otherwise worsen back pain.

FAQs

What is the best mattress for hip and shoulder pain?

Side sleepers dealing with hip and shoulder need soft to medium mattresses. These beds properly cushion the hips and shoulders to reduce numbness, stiffness, and chronic pain. At the same time, softer beds still provide sufficient support to properly align the spine.

Some of the best mattresses for hip and shoulder pain include the Zoma Hybrid, Amerisleep Organica, and Saatva Classic.

Are firm or soft mattresses better for a bad back?

There’s not a specific type of mattress best for a bad back since so many factors affect back pain. Your sleeping position makes the biggest impact on the mattress firmness you need, back pain or not.

Back and stomach sleepers do well with a firm mattresses as they’re resistant to sinking. Try beds such as the Amerisleep AS2 or Saatva Classic. Meanwhile, side sleepers need softer mattresses to cushion their hips and shoulders while supporting the back. We suggest looking into mattresses including the Amerisleep Organica or Zoma Hybrid mattress.

Is memory foam bad for your back?

A common misconception is that memory foam is overly soft and unsupportive, leading to back pain. But this isn’t true. If anything, memory foam is good for your back. It provides excellent pressure point relief and cushions your lower back to prevent pain.

With that, it’s important to choose the right mattress firmness. Your mattress’s firmness—memory foam mattresses or not—can make or break your comfort and pain relief. We often recommend medium-firm mattresses to people with back pain for proper support and mild cushioning.

How do you know if your mattress is the wrong firmness?

There are several clear signs if your mattress is the wrong firmness for your needs.

Your mattress may be too firm if:

  • You wake up with back, neck, or shoulder pain and stiffness
  • Your arm or hand feels numb, tingly, or stiff
  • Your mattress does not contour to your body

Your mattress may be too soft if:

  • You wake up with lower back pain or stiffness
  • You sleep on your stomach and wake up with neck pain
  • You struggle to get in and out of bed
  • You feel your mattress “bottoming out” when you lay on it

Do you need a softer mattress as you get older?

Being old doesn’t exactly mean you need a softer mattress. However, older adults and elderly people tend to develop joint issues and chronic pain. So, a soft mattress can provide significant pressure relief for these potential issues.

Despite your age, consider your weight and sleeping position to best choose a mattress firmness. This way, your spine is in healthy alignment and your joints are well-cushioned.

Conclusion

You don’t have to deal with chronic pain forever. With the right mattress, you can protect achy joints and muscles and get a good night’s sleep. Use our guide to compare mattress models and better understand what mattress types and firmness levels works best for you.
