As a pediatrician deeply invested in promoting healthy sleep habits for children and their families, I understand the pivotal role that quality sleep plays in overall well-being. With over eight years of experience, I’ve consistently advocated for the importance of good sleep, which led me to test the Zoma Start mattress for a month. This opportunity resonated with me, as my career revolves around ensuring children’s optimal sleep conditions.

During my month-long trial of the Zoma Start mattress, I combined my medical expertise with my personal experience as a mother. I observed how the mattress’s design and features catered to sleep quality, particularly for children. This comprehensive approach allowed me to assess the mattress’s impact not only from a medical standpoint but also from the perspective of a parent who seeks the best sleep environment for her children.

Enhancing this review, we have Dr. Jordan Burns, a chiropractic and sleep expert, providing his valuable insights from a practical and ergonomic standpoint. Dr. Burns’ first-hand experience, shared in his video presentation above, complements my medical and parental perspective, offering a holistic view of the mattress.

Integrating Dr. Burns’ practical insights with my medical perspective enriches this review. And to sum it up for any interested shoppers, the Zoma Start Mattress emerges as a reliable, comfortable, and environmentally friendly option for families.

Unboxing and Setting Up the Mattress

I recently decided to try out the Zoma Start mattress, and my experience has been quite impressive. Upon ordering a mattress online, the bed arrived in a conveniently compact box, vacuum-sealed for efficiency. Unboxing was a breeze – I opened the packaging, observed the mattress rapidly expand to its full 10-inch thickness, and then placed it onto my bed frame.

This hassle-free setup made the entire process seamless and user-friendly, allowing me to quickly enjoy the benefits of the Zoma Start mattress. There was a noticeable chemical smell that lingered for a while, but otherwise, the setup was simple and trouble-free. For this detectable odor, I give the mattress a 4 out of 5 (1 being no odor and 5 being a strong odor).

Off-gassing was the biggest issue we had but delivery and customer support was excellent.

Dr. Burns shares his unboxing experience as well, noting, “I noticed no off-gassing smell… The Zoma Start expands quickly.” This contrasts slightly with my observation of a mild odor, which underscores the subjective nature of the unboxing experience.

Examining the Mattress for Comfort, Support and Durability

One of the mattresses from the best mattresses 2024 list is Zoma Start. The credit goes to its excellent construction. Zoma is open about the construction and materials used in their Zoma Start mattress and kept the design in mind as I stretched out and prepared to sleep that first night.

The comfort layer of the Zoma Start is cooling gel foam, thoughtfully designed to alleviate pressure on your lower back while also delivering temperature regulation throughout the night for a deep sleep environment. As I tested the Zoma Start out in the hot summer heat, I appreciated the mattress’s ability to stay cool as I sleep.

Situated beneath is the Reactiv™ foam layer, which brings a significant level of responsiveness to the mattress. This is especially advantageous for stomach sleepers who require that extra support to prevent any misalignment of their spine and ensuing discomfort, but it’s also helpful if you move in the night or when you get out of bed in the morning.

The base layer of the Zoma Start features Support+ foam, strategically engineered to resist sagging or impressions over time. This durability factor ensures that the Zoma Start mattress design translates into years of consistent comfort and reliable performance. This factor was especially important to me, as I have raised children of mine and worked with others and I know how active they can be, even with beds.

Another point that swayed me in the Zoma Start’s favor is that it’s a well-known mattress without fiberglass. Some of the consumer reviews I browsed before testing it expressed the same as me, saying they had been looking for a budget-friendly mattress made without this troublesome material.

Dr. Burns similarly highlights the layered construction of the Zoma Start. “Starting at the base, we have the Support Plus base layer, providing durable support… Nearing the top now, we have the gel memory foam layer which eases pain-causing pressure points,” explains Dr. Burns. This aligns with my observations on the mattress’s ability to support a child’s developing spine.

I put the mattress through its paces in the month I tested it, and I would give both its durability and its support/comfort a 4 out of 5, each nearly perfect.

Firmness and Relieving Pressure

I’d say the Zoma Start falls at about a 7 on the firmness scale, which goes up to 10. It’s not overly soft but isn’t wholly firm, either.

“It’s classified as medium,” Dr. Burns states, backing up my observation, though I should note that even identical mattress models can feel different to sleepers due to variations in body type and weight.

“I found it to be comfortable in various sleeping positions, making it ideal for combination sleepers,” Dr. Burns continued. As a pediatrician, I concur, noting its balanced support for growing children.

When I lied down, I felt a clear sense of contouring and cushioned comfort, all while maintaining good support. The foams seemed to adjust to my body shape, offering relief from pressure while keeping my spine aligned.

While the bed could feel firm, I woke up with no aches and pains nor did I ever experience major stiffness and soreness from lying down. I would rate the bed’s pressure-relieving capabilities as a 5 out of 5.

Staying Cool at Night

Lying down on the Zoma Start, it was impossible to miss how cool the bed was. Like a gentle wet cloth laid across the forehead, only the sensation enveloped my whole body, earning it a near-perfect 4 out of 5 for its temperature neutrality.

Given the scorching summer we’ve just experienced, the mattress’s ability to remain cool during my sleep was crucial. While I didn’t completely enjoy a cool night’s rest, I do feel that the Zoma Start helped me sleep better and averted any unpleasant sweating. As I evaluate my sleep temperature experience, I would rate it a 3 out of 5 (with 1 indicating a cool sleep and 5 reflecting a warm one).

Dr. Burns also praises its cooling and breathability, “I give it a 9 out of 10 for cooling and breathability.”

Moving about on the Mattress

Of course, while the main point of a mattress is to have a cozy place to sleep, you have to think about how easy it is to move on the bed when you wake up. I found that moving around and getting in and out of bed was nearly effortless due to the quick response of the materials.

The Zoma Start also had an impressive amount of edge support, the sides holding up against my weight well as I shuffled out of bed in the morning. I would give both of these features a 4 out of 5.

“The edge support is excellent… I would rate it a 10 out of 10,” Dr. Burns said.

Dr. Burns also conducted practical tests to gauge the Zoma Start’s responsiveness, to see how it adapted to movement and isolated motion. He dropped small weights onto the mattress, holding them above his head to do so, and observed how the surface reacted.

The weight exhibited a gentle bounce, and the mattress promptly embraced it as it settled. Impressively, the mattress swiftly returned to its original shape within seconds of the weight being lifted.

Dr. Burns, in his practical tests, remarked, “The response time is impressive, rating an 8 out of 10.”

Similar tests were performed by leaving the weights on the surface and moving across the mattress, to see if mattress materials carried the motion and disturbed the weight where it was settled. The Zoma Start performed well for Dr. Burns here, too.

He observed minimal motion transfer, a critical aspect for preserving undisturbed sleep, particularly in a family bed or couples’ mattress.

Looking at the Mattress’s Price

As the most inexpensive model that Zoma offers, the Zoma Start has a lot going for it affordability-wise. Of course, as someone who’s raised a family, I know it’s not just about what you spend but the value you get with it—no one wants to buy something that’s quick to break or bust into pieces, and that especially applies to a commitment like a new mattress.

However, going off the durability and comfort scores I’ve given this mattress, I expect that I could get years of good sleep out of this mattress easily. And I would say the same to any parent seeing me for their children—for example, if they purchased a twin XL for their child to sleep on for at least the next 10 years, that would be roughly equal to budgeting $50 a year for their child to have a good night’s sleep. A pretty fair deal, all things considered.

Eco-Friendly Approach

Crafted with a clear sense of purpose, I’m truly impressed by Zoma’s unwavering commitment to minimizing environmental impact. Zoma, proudly produced in the USA, employs eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

The foams used are CertiPUR-US® certified, ensuring the mattress free from harmful chemicals and has low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This dedication makes Zoma not just a smarter mattress choice for me but also a commendable contribution to environmental well-being.

Echoing my sentiments, Dr. Burns appreciates Zoma’s commitment to sustainability. “Zoma’s mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials,” he points out, emphasizing their responsibility towards a healthier environment.

What’s Being Said about the Zoma Start

Before I tested the Zoma Start, I did as others do and looked at the reviews it had to see what people thought of sleeping on it. I was pleased to see it had good feedback overall, and have included a few of the ones that moved me to try it out for myself:

  • Veronica L. was drawn to the Zoma Start due to its affordability, good ratings, and the absence of fiberglass in its construction. After sleeping on the mattress, they felt great and considered it a worthwhile investment.
  • Andrew B. was immensely satisfied with the Zoma Start, describing it as the most comfortable one they’ve ever purchased. After previously struggling with discomfort from a baby, they tried a new mattress and found the balance between firmness and softness to be ideal. It’s a great relief after a tiring day and allows them to sleep soundly through the night. They too appreciate the absence of fiberglass in its composition.
  • Elizabeth T. found the mattress to be a good bed for a low price, calling it “extremely comfortable and well-made” and its firm feel was what they expected from such a foam mattress.

Dr. Nilong Vyas’ Final Thoughts

Overall, the Zoma Start was firm and provided good support for all sleeping positions. The temperature was not an issue and was consistent with body temperature throughout the night. The look of the mattress without sheets was nice and clean. However, the off-gassing was problematic but even that issue cleared up within a few days.

I’ve seen a positive change in my sleep quality, and would give my experience with the Zoma Start a positive 4 out of 5 overall. And I plan on getting a second mattress for our family.

As a pediatrician dedicated to improving children’s sleep habits, I aim to provide parents with comprehensive and trustworthy mattress reviews. Dr. Jordan Burns’ additional insights in this article further our understanding of what makes a mattress suitable for families.
