The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has a medium feel, perfect for side and combination sleepers—the medium feel provides optimal pressure relief in the shoulders and hips. It is 12 inches tall and contains 3 inches of Bio-Pur®, 2 inches of Affinity, and 7 inches of Bio-Core®.

Amerisleep includes a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty, covering sagging greater than an inch. The mattress also ships free across the country. This Memorial Day, save $450 on a new mattress.

Bio-Pur® is a plant-based memory foam—manufacturers partially replace petroleum with plant oils to produce a breathable, responsive memory foam. Bio-Pur® conforms to the body without the sleeper feeling “stuck.” Bio-Pur® also has little to no off-gassing odor.

The Affinity transition layer uses HIVE® technology, where hundreds of hexagonal-shaped segments form 5 zones of support; a softer feel under the shoulders and hips and a firmer feel under the head, back, and legs for enhanced pressure point relief and healthy spinal alignment.

Bio-Core® is a base foam, it evenly distributes weight across the sleep surface and is guaranteed to last. The mattress cover uses a soft and breathable material for optimal airflow.

Another great mattress by Amerisleep to mention is their AS5 Hybrid, a soft but bouncy bed recommended for side, back, and combination sleepers. What we really like about this soft mattress, though, is its ability to support even sleepers over 230 pounds. Most plus-size sleepers struggle to find a soft, supportive bed, but the AS5 Hybrid fits the bill perfectly.

The AS5 Hybrid is Amerisleep’s softest hybrid mattress and delivers a “cloud-like” sleep experience. It starts with 3 inches of Bio-Pur® foam to contour to your body and relieve pain-causing pressure points.

Below the comfort layer of plant-based Bio-Pur®, is a responsive latex-like layer called Active Flex. Active Flex allows for deeper cushioning while also keeping you lifted in a neutral position. Its primary purpose is to stop uncomfortable sinkage.

Next up is an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils. These coils are wrapped to deter motion transfer, ensuring that one partner’s movements won’t wake up another. Along the sides the coils are firmer and thicker to provide edge support.

The core layer of every Amerisleep hybrid is durable poly-foam to resist sagging and sinkage, structuring the coils for reinforced stability.

The AS5 Hybrid, like all other Amerisleep mattresses, comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

The Zoma Hybrid is a hybrid mattress constructed to deliver coolness, while also offering a balanced and buoyant feel. The mattress is 12 inches tall with four layers. A mattress cover made with AirCloth fabric encases the bed.

The comfort layer is gel memory foam. This gel memory foam molds to the body yet stays cool throughout the night, easing pressure and pain after a long day.

The second layer is 2 inches of Reactiv™ foam, a responsive foam that limits sinkage. When you sink too deeply into a mattress, it can misalign your spine and leave you with a bad case of morning back pain.

The bed’s support is 7 inches of pocketed coils resting on a 1-inch foam base. These individually wrapped coils isolate motion, so your movements won’t disturb a partner’s rest and vice versa.

All Zoma mattresses include a 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty. If you decide to return your mattress after 30 nights, Zoma will give you a full refund.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a premium hybrid mattress designed to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep experience for side sleepers. It is designed to improve upon their original Helix Midnight mattress with extra cooling and supportive features. The bed is constructed using a combination of memory foam and individually wrapped coils, which work together to provide both pressure relief and support.

The top of the mattress is covered in a soft and breathable Tencel cover, which is designed to wick away moisture and provide a cool and comfortable sleep surface. Shoppers can upgrade to the GlacioTex™ cover option for an extra burst of coolness.

The comfort layer of the Helix Midnight Luxe is made up of two different types of contouring foams. The first layer is a high-density foam that provides deep compression support and contouring. The second layer is a copper gel-infused memory foam that helps to regulate temperature and provide a cool sleep surface.

Next, there is a layer of transition foam that provides a buffer between the coils and the comfort layer. This layer helps to ensure that the coils do not poke through the comfort layer and also provides additional support.

Then there are individually wrapped coils that provide support and help to distribute weight evenly across the mattress. These coils are designed to respond to the individual contours of the body, which helps to reduce pressure points and provide targeted support. Aside from three zones of support, the coils also feature edge support along the sides.

Last is a base layer of high-density foam, which provides a stable foundation for the mattress.

The mattress top is covered in an organic cotton cover, quilted and finished with a matelassé woven feel. This quickly establishes a plush and breathable surface.

Next is a fire retardant layer of organic wool, followed by a layer of organic cashmere with organic wool for cushioning. Further underlying layers of organic wool ensure a pillowy feel when you lie down, establishing a luxury hybrid mattress.

Then, there is a layer of natural Talalay latex. Talalay latex is a sustainable material that is derived from the sap of rubber trees. It is hypoallergenic and provides a responsive and supportive sleep surface. The Talalay latex layer is also ventilated, which allows for better airflow through the Birch mattress and helps to regulate temperature.

The pocketed coil support is arranged to provide three separate support zones, with the coils along the side establishing edge support. These coils rest on a base of organic wool that also serves as a second fire retardant layer.

Athletes need a performance mattress that can help them achieve a good night’s sleep. One of the top performers when it comes to mattresses for recovery is still the Bear Original. Conceived to help athletes sleep better, the Bear Original mattress can be an excellent choice for anyone who wants to take their sleep to the next level.

The Original mattress features a cooling gel memory foam layer that dispels body heat and conforms to your shape for ultimate comfort. This, combined with the breathable cover, works to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating during sleep. The cover is especially notable for its Celliant® fibers, which can convert absorbed heat into infrared energy.

The next layer is a dynamic support foam that relieves pressure while maintaining a firm mattress feel, increasing the buoyancy of the top layer. Finally, a high-density base foam keeps your body elevated and adds durability, rivaling pricier options in lifespan.

This Bear mattress offers a mildly firm feel, delivering support while still providing light pressure relief. Sleepers can feel the mattress gently conform to the body without sinking too far into the surface.

The Big Fig Hybrid Mattress is a 13-inch thick mattress that is designed to offer a combination of comfort and restful sleep for individuals who need extra support due to their body weight or height. The mattress can support 550 pounds per sleeper, or 1,100 pounds for a couples’ mattress. If you’re a big or tall sleeper who needs a mattress that can bear a bit of extra brunt, the Big Fig might be the bed for you.

The Big Fig Hybrid Mattress is covered with a quilted top, with a fabric treated with ThermoGel to promote cooler sleep. The mattress is also tufted in 16 spots to prevent materials from shifting and causing discomfort.

The top layer of the mattress is made of 1.5 inches of perforated gel-infused latex foam. This layer is designed to provide comfort and cooling properties for a restful night’s sleep.

The next three layers of the mattress are high-density polyfoam. These layers act as a transition between the comfort layer and the support layer and help to distribute weight evenly across the surface.

The support layer is individually wrapped coil springs. This layer provides the foundational support for the mattress and helps to maintain proper spinal alignment. The coils are reinforced with edge support for added durability.

The coils also rest on a high-density foam base. This layer provides a stable foundation for the mattress and helps to prevent it from shifting on the bed frame.

Other Deals and Promotions

Major mattress retailers like Macy’s, Sears, and Amazon may offer excellent deals, bundles, and discounts off different mattress brands during their Memorial Day sale. Other companies, including Mattress Firm, provide the same mattress discounts and promotions during Memorial Day weekend.

Online vs. In-Store

Memorial Day mattress deals vary between online and in-store sources. Online or mattress in a box brands have ongoing sales throughout the year, with possibly better deals than brick-and-mortar shops.

Online companies cut out the middleman (commissions, stocking fees, etc.), so they can provide high-quality materials at a lower cost. Because customers aren’t able to try out a new mattress before buying, online brands give extended sleep trials and warranties.

Online mattress shopping may drop their deals earlier, too. In-store mattress sales usually happen around holiday weekends, and between February and May (mattress retailers offer deep discounts for older models to make way for newer mattresses). Stores may offer special promotions, like bundles and rebates, to entice more customers.

An advantage of in-store shopping is customers can try out a mattress before buying; however, the bed may cost more due to sales commissions and stocking fees.

Another bonus to shopping at a brick-and-mortar shop is same-day or next-day delivery—some mattress companies may also include white glove delivery. However, many online mattresses also come with free setup and old mattress removal.

How to Find the Best Mattress Deals

If you’re looking for a new bed this Memorial Day, score the best deal by researching ahead of time, considering personal preferences, setting a budget, checking customer reviews, and reading up on available sleep trials, return policies, and warranties.

Research Ahead of Time

Check company websites and ads a week before Memorial Day weekend to compare available sales and discounts, and scope out the best deal. Many of the early Memorial Day sales are comparable to what you can expect the day of, so you might want to jump on them when you get the chance.

Consider Personal Preferences

Personal preferences, like sleeping position, body weight, and mattress type, have a significant impact on sleep quality.

Sleeping Position

Each sleep position needs a balance of comfort and support to maintain spinal alignment. Poor alignment leads to sleep disruptions and aching joints.

  • Side Sleeping

Most common sleep position, enabling better breathing, improving heart health, and reducing acid reflux. The best mattress for side sleepers is soft to medium for optimal pressure point relief in the shoulder and hip areas.

  • Back Sleeping

Back sleeping naturally aligns the spine but back sleepers have a higher risk of developing sleep apnea. Back sleepers feel the best comfort on a medium to firm mattress. These mattresses for back sleeping cradle the hips and form against the spine.

  • Stomach Sleeping

Least common sleep position due to the high amount of spinal pressure, increasing the risk of neck strain and back pain. The best mattress for stomach sleepers is medium-firm to firm. These mattresses keep the body resting on the surface with no deep sinking and misalignment.

  • Combination Sleeping

Combination sleepers switch between different sleep positions each night, receiving the benefits of each, like better breathing, but also the drawbacks, including back pain. Combination sleepers need a medium to medium-firm feel to maintain spinal alignment. Such mattresses for combination sleeping should also offer a responsive surface.

Body Weight

Body weight determines the level of comfort and support you need without the risk of sagging. Lightweight sleepers, for instance, sleep best on softer surfaces, while plus-size sleepers find the best comfort on a firmer mattress.

  • Light

Weigh less than 130 pounds and need a softer surface to enable body-contouring, pressure relief. Without the right mattress for lightweight sleepers, pressure can build up into pain.

  • Average

Weigh between 130 to 230 pounds. A medium feel is best for a balance of comfort and support.

  • Plus-Size

Weigh more than 230 pounds and need a firmer surface to support the body without risk of sagging. The best mattresses are heavy sleepers are durable and able to withstand years of use.

Mattress Type

Memory foam, innerspring, latex, and hybrid mattresses offer a unique feel, and some customers may prefer one type of mattress over the other. For example, some shoppers are looking for the conforming feel of memory foam, while others like the bouncy feel of innerspring coils.

  • Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses use heat and pressure to conform to the body to relieve pressure points. Memory foam also has excellent motion isolation, which makes memory foam mattresses excellent for couples who want to avoid disturbing each other’s sleep.

  • Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are common in households, providing bounce, cooling, and edge support through innerspring coils. They have lost a bit of popularity as other mattress types have taken the stage, but a high end innerspring mattress can still offer features like a cushioning Euro pillow top.

  • Latex

Latex mattresses are similar to memory foam in conforming to the body to relieve pressure points, except they’re cooler and have a responsive bounce. Plus, they’re the best option if you’re looking for an organic mattress with eco-friendly materials.

  • Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses combine pressure-relieving memory foam or latex with the bounce of innerspring coils to form the “perfect” bed.

Types of Deals

Mattress retailers offer different deals, including discounts, bundles, rebates, and freebies, to attract customers and make a profit. Know the difference between each type of deal, and decide which is best for you.

Discounts

Discounts are reductions taken off at the time of purchase, either automatically or by inputting a promotional code at checkout. See our mattress coupons and promo codes guide for more information.

Bundles

Bundle deals bring together a mattress with other bedding accessories, like an adjustable base or box spring, for a discounted price. Bundles are great if you need the included accessories, like a mattress protector to safeguard your new purchase, but not so good if you only need the mattress.

Potential accessories that might be bundled with a new mattress include:

  • Pillows
  • Adjustable beds
  • Mattress protectors
  • Sheets

Bedding brands also typically offer items like sheet sets at a significant discount during Memorial Day mattress sales. So if you’re not a fan of the items included in a bundle and prefer to pick out your own, you can still save by shopping the sales and looking for items such as mattress toppers or an adjustable bed frame.

Rebates

Rebates are a partial refund of the sale price, usually in the form of a check, gift card, or store credit. Rebates are redeemed by mailing a proof of purchase to the retailer or mattress manufacturer and could take a few weeks to receive.

Freebies

Freebies, like pillows and sheets, may come with the purchase of a mattress. Before choosing this type of deal, ask yourself if you need the free gifts and scrutinize the mattress they come with. While a free mattress protector or a free bedding set is nice, these sleep accessories can’t make up for a lackluster cheap mattress.

That’s not to say that the best mattress sales can’t include free gifts. It’s just important to not let free goodies distract you from your goal of choosing the best mattress.

Set a Budget

After getting a better idea of what you want and available discounts, set a budget and stick to it. A high price tag doesn’t equal high-quality. Customers can score a high-quality, queen size mattress for $1200.

Check Customer Reviews

Check mattress reviews, especially verified customer reviews, to get better insight into a potential mattress purchase, comparing the pros and cons before committing to a bed.

Sleep Trials, Return Policies, Warranties

Perks like sleep trials, return policies, and warranties reassure customers of a sound purchase. If a potential mattress doesn’t include at least two of these policies, it could be the sign of a cheap bed.

Sleep Trial

A sleep trial is an in-home trial period where customers can try out a mattress without pressure from salesmen. Sleep trials last between 90 to 120 nights, with some mattress brands requiring customers to keep the mattress at least 30 days. If the customer doesn’t like the mattress, most companies will issue a full refund.

Return Policy

If a mattress is missing a sleep trial, check out the return policy. Return policies last about 30 days, the same time it may take for the body to adjust to a new sleep surface. Should the customer not like the mattress, they can return it for a refund.

Warranty

A warranty covers manufacturing defects and sagging greater than 1 inch, depending on the company. Mattress warranties only apply to the original purchaser and are void if sold to a third party.

We strongly recommend shoppers always purchase a mattress with a warranty, at least. While you can get by without a way to return the mattress, no warranty leaves a shopper with no recourse if the bed develops a defect.

Do I Need to Replace My Mattress?

Here are some signs that it may be time to replace your mattress:

  1. Age: Most mattresses have a lifespan of 7-10 years, depending on the quality of the materials and how well it’s been maintained. If your mattress is nearing or has passed this age range, it may be time to consider a replacement.
  2. Sagging or lumps: If you notice that your mattress has developed sagging or lumps, it may no longer be providing the support you need for a comfortable and restful night’s sleep.
  3. Pain or discomfort: If you wake up feeling sore, stiff, or uncomfortable, it may be a sign that your mattress is no longer providing the support you need or has developed unevenness.
  4. Allergies or asthma: Over time, mattresses can accumulate dust mites, mold, and other allergens that can aggravate allergies or asthma symptoms. If you’ve noticed an increase in your allergy or asthma symptoms, it may be time to replace your mattress.
  5. Noise or motion transfer: If your mattress makes noise when you move or you can feel your partner’s movements throughout the night, it may be time for a replacement that can reduce motion transfer quietly.

You may be able to stretch out the use of your current mattress with mattress protectors and mattress toppers. However, if your mattress is helping you get a good night’s sleep, it’s best to replace it as soon as you can.

Choosing the Right Mattress Size

Most mattress manufacturers offer these standard mattress sizes.

Other Things to Consider

What is the best holiday to buy a mattress?

Long weekends, including Memorial Day, President’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Black Friday, are excellent times to buy a mattress. Memorial Day is often considered one of the best sales days because of the fact that it fell in May.

Many mattress stores offer deals in May because new mattress models often launch in the summer. So they seek to quickly clear out older stock to free up space by pushing select mattress purchases.

Is it better to buy a mattress online or in-store?

Online mattress brands provide better Memorial Day deals at a lower cost. Because online retailers cut out the middleman (i.e., commissions, storage fees), they can afford higher-quality materials at lower prices to customers. Plus, online companies provide extended sleep trials and warranties.

How much should I pay for a good mattress?

On average, a high-quality queen size mattress costs anywhere between $1,000 to $1,500. Some may cost more or less, and that’s not to say they’re too expensive or cheap, respectively, but most people spend around a grand on a new bed. To determine if a mattress is a good value, evaluate its materials and construction to see if you’re getting a quality bed for the money.

Are mattress in a boxes comfortable?

Though they’re delivered in a box to your doorstep, mattress in a boxes are just as comfortable as beds you’d find in your local mattress retailer. Really, their only difference is their delivery method.

Mattress in a box brands use special machinery to compress and roll their mattresses without causing damage. Once unpackaged, mattress in a boxes slowly gain shape and return to their normal size, delivering better sleep and lasting just as long as beds from brick and mortar mattress stores.

What is the best mattress to buy?

It depends on who’s making the purchase. Many brands claim to sell the “best mattress,” but the thing is, everybody has different sleep needs, so there is no one “best mattress” out there. To find your best mattress, think about what it is you need from a bed while shopping.

Are you a side sleeper who needs cushion or are you a stomach sleeper who needs firm support? Do you have frequent aches and discomfort, or do you wake up most mornings pain-free? Ultimately, ask yourself why you’re buying a new bed, and use those specifics to weed out mattresses that won’t fit the bill. After enough research, you’ll land on a comfortable bed.

When do Memorial Day mattress sales begin in 2024?

Most stores don’t wait until Memorial Day to offer customers a great deal. Some mattress sellers start their sales a few days before Memorial Day, others a full week before Memorial Day. Many brands also offer sale prices for about a week after Memorial Day.

Do Memorial Day mattress sales include bedding?

Yes, many Memorial Day mattress sales include discounts on blankets, pillows, sheets, mattress protectors, and more. Bed frames and adjustable beds may also have lowered prices. Some mattress stores even include free pillows or bedding with a mattress purchase during their Memorial Day sales.

Find the Best Deal This Memorial Day

A new mattress could be the solution to better sleep. Mattresses last between 7 to 9 years—if your current bed is showing a definite sag, it’s time to replace it with the best mattress this Memorial Day.
