Types of Mattresses Available in Canada

One step to finding the best mattress is deciding what type of mattress you’d like. Choosing a mattress type helps you sort through the countless beds on the market and gives you an idea of how your future bed will perform.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are known for their excellent pain and pressure relief. Not only that, but many memory foam beds are affordable and come in endless varieties. Since traditional memory foam tends to get hot, look for memory foam mattresses with gel, copper, graphite, or plant-based foam to prevent overheating.

Latex

Latex mattresses are one of the most sustainable bedding options because they’re produced from rubber tree sap. Plus, latex is the most durable type of mattress, so you’ll get to use a latex bed for between 12 to 15 years rather than the typical 8 to 10 years.

Latex is a type of foam, but unlike memory foam or poly-foam, it stays cool throughout the night and is noticeably buoyant. You won’t sink into your bed but will still enjoy cushiony pressure relief.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are made from steel springs and have pillow tops or Euro tops usually made from down, cotton, or polyester. While innerspring beds are well-known, affordable, and have been around for ages, they’re not always the best mattress out there. Some innerspring beds are prone to squeaking and the coils can snap after a few years.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are similar to innerspring mattresses, but they’re arguably better. A hybrid mattress contains steel coils wrapped in a lightweight fabric and, rather than a pillow top, a foam comfort layer. Unlike traditional innerspring mattresses, hybrid mattresses provide closer support and better cushioning. Plus, the coils in hybrid beds are unlikely to squeak or break.

Tips For Buying a Mattress in Canada

When shopping for a mattress, there are several factors you should always consider to find the best one for you. As a Canadian citizen, it’s equally important to consider shipping costs—particularly when buying from other countries—so you don’t end up paying hundreds in duties.

Set a Budget

Before even browsing mattresses, it’s important to decide how much you can spend. By determining your budget, you can narrow down your options quickly and won’t risk getting caught up by intriguing sales or unnecessary features in more expensive beds.

Most mattresses cost between C$400 and C$1800 depending on the size and materials inside the bed, which is quite the investment for most shoppers. Plus, you have to consider shipping, taxes, and duties, especially if you buy a mattress from the US or any other country.

Choose a Mattress Firmness

When it comes to finding the right mattress firmness for you, it’s important to consider your sleeping position and body weight. For example, side sleepers often prefer a softer mattress that can cushion their shoulders and hips, while back and stomach sleepers typically prefer an extra firm mattress because it provides more support.

Mattress firmness is how cushiony or firm a mattress is. It’s rated on a scale from 1 to 10, or extra-soft to extra-firm. Most mattresses will fall towards the middle of the scale and aren’t on the extreme end of the things.

Your sleeping position affects what parts of your body need cushioning and what parts need support. With that, it also impacts how much cushioning and support your body needs. Here’s a rundown of what firmnesses to use for each sleeping position:

  • Mattresses for side sleeping – Soft to medium (3 to 5)
  • Mattresses for back sleeping – Medium to medium-firm (5 to 7)
  • Mattresses for stomach sleeping – Medium-firm to firm (7 to 9)
  • Mattresses for combination sleeping – Medium (5)

General firmness recommendations are based on the average-sized person who weighs between 130 to 230 pounds. If you weigh more or less this, mattresses may respond differently under you. So, it’s best to adjust your firmness choices as so:

  • Petite people who weigh under 130 pounds should use softer mattresses than what’s recommended for their sleeping position
  • Heavy people who weigh over 130 pounds should use firmer mattresses than what’s recommended for their sleeping position. Mattresses for heavy people need to support and evenly distribute body weight.

Consider Shipping Costs

When shopping for a mattress in Canada, always look at how much shipping will be. Most Canadian brands will offer free or very reasonable shipping prices, though international brands may charge more. With shopping from international brands, you’ll likely have to pay high duties based on how much the mattress costs.

Some mattress companies only offer to ship within their own country. So if you want a mattress from a non-Canadian brand, you’ll have to plan and pay for your shipping.

Certain brands will ship to a third-party shipping company within their country for you. From there, you’ll have to organize your shipping to get the mattress to your home. This gets rather costly, but may be worth it for some shoppers.

Look at Warranty and Trial Policies

Whenever investing in something as important as a new mattress, be sure it includes a good sleep trial and warranty policy.

Sleep trials are a specific length of time where you can use a mattress as normal after buying it. If you decide the mattress doesn’t work for you, companies will accept returns and give a free refund. Many companies even offer free returns, though others will charge shipping fees to send the mattress back or recycle it.

The ideal sleep trial should last at least 60 days so you have enough time to try the mattress and return it if you choose.

Not all companies offer sleep trials, but they’ll almost always offer warranties. A mattress warranty protects your purchase (ideally for at least 10 years or more) in case it sags or suffers any workmanship defects. Limited mattress warranties mean you’ll have to pay a fee for repairs or replacements, while full warranties cover repairs and replacements for free.

FAQs

How much do mattresses in Canada cost?

Just like in other countries, mattresses in Canada come in a wide variety of prices. It’ll vary based on the material, size, and quality of the mattress. The average price of a mattress in Canada is roughly C$800, but some cost as little as C$150 while others are over C$5000.

Generally, you’ll get the best value on a mattress by buying a bed from a Canadian mattress company or companies with distribution centers within Canada. This greatly reduces the cost of shipping and you won’t have to worry about paying duties for international shipping.

What is the best mattress for back pain in Canada?

People suffering from back pain generally fare best on medium-firm mattresses. A medium-firm mattress provides excellent spinal support while still cushioning your lower back to soothe pain.

A few of the best mattresses for back pain in Canada are the Zoma Mattress, Silk & Snow Hybrid, and Logan & Cove Mattress.

What mattress is best for side sleepers in Canada?

When side sleeping, we recommend looking for medium or soft mattresses. Softer beds properly cushion your hips and shoulders while still supporting your spine, preventing pressure build-up. Some of the best mattresses for side sleepers in Canada include the Vaya Mattress, Amerisleep AS3, and Alexander Signature Hybrid.

Where is the best place to buy mattresses in Canada?

There’s no one best store to buy mattresses in Canada as it’s all subjective. Still, we’d argue that shopping for a mattress online in Canada is better than going to stores. When shopping online mattresses you’re more likely to find good deals and sales, a wider selection of products, and you’ll have an easier time shopping since there are no salespeople to push you in the wrong direction.

What are the standard mattress sizes in Canada?

Compared to the USA or European countries, there are a substantial (almost overwhelming) number of mattress sizes available at most Canadian mattress manufacturers. The sizes are as follows:

  • Crib – 71 by 129.5 cm (28 by 51 in)
  • Half Queen – 76 by 202 cm (30 by 79.5 in)
  • Small Single – 76 by 190.5 cm (30 by 75 in)
  • Single (Twin) – 96.5 by 189 cm (38 by 74.5 in)
  • Single Extra Long (Twin XL) – 96.5 by 202 cm (38 by 79.5 in)
  • Standard (Double or Full) – 134.5 by 189 cm (53 by 74.5 in)
  • Queen – 152.5 by 202 cm (60 by 79.5 in)
  • King – 193 by 202 cm (76 by 79.5 in)
  • California King – 183 by 213.5 cm (72 by 84 in)
  • Super King – 183-217 by 198-249 cm (72-85.5 by 78-98 in)

Conclusion

Mattress shopping in Canada is no different than shopping in any other country. The main priority is to find which mattresses are available in Canada since not all international brands will ship to your country. Other than that, knowing what type of bed you want, determining your budget, and choosing a mattress firmness is how to find the best mattress!

What’s a Certified Sleep Coach?

Our writers are sleep coaches certified by the Spencer Institute, which has been training coaches since 1992. Becoming a certified sleep coach means that our writers are well-versed in various sleep science matters, taking us beyond being just a group of mattress reviewers. The certification allows us an in-depth understanding of what we’re talking about when it comes to advising readers on better sleep habits.
