Our dedicated team of sleep science coaches, engineers, and product evaluators thoroughly investigate hundreds of mattresses using our unique product methodology. Each article is reviewed for accuracy, referencing only trustworthy sources. Consistently updating our content and picks, we align with the latest scientific literature and expert counsel. Our top-rated mattresses have been personally reviewed and highly rated.

When it comes to sleep, the surface we find most comfortable depends on our body type and sleep habits. Even the best mattresses are not one-size-fits-all. A lightweight side sleeper may find a softer mattress more comfortable. A heavier back sleeper will prefer something firmer. But for couples with different preferences, it can often be difficult to decide on a firmness level that suits you both. That’s where a split king mattress can help.

Once you are ready to upgrade to a king-size mattress, opting for a split king mattress allows you and your spouse to select the firmness for each side of the bed. With a split king mattress, you can each choose the comfort level most suited to your individual needs. To help you select the best split king mattress, we have reviewed several high-quality options. Plus, we have included some points to keep in mind as you shop.

If you are interested in pairing your new split king mattress with an adjustable base, we have also included reviews of two of the most advanced bed frames on the market.

9.5 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 10 Cooling & Breathability

The first thing you’ll notice when lying down on the AS3 is its fantastic contouring ability. The AS3’s plant-based Bio-PurⓇ foam contours better than even the most high-quality petroleum foams. That means the AS3 offers so much pressure relief that even some side sleepers can enjoy it despite its medium feel.

The AS3 is also a lot more responsive than most other memory foam mattresses. The Bio-PurⓇ foam has a much quicker response time than petroleum-based memory foam. That means you won’t have to deal with body impressions or slow response time. That’s perfect for active sleepers who want memory foam beds.

Hundreds of people who purchased the Amerisleep split king mattress have left us feedback and almost all of them loved it, here are some of their thoughts:

Tpburris: Overall we are really happy with our beds. Since we have the split king mattress we both can raise the head and foot for what is comfortable to each of us. They have held up well so far, providing support without being hard. The only thing we do not like is the gap between the beds. We would still buy though even knowing that.

The Photographer: The twin/ split king mattress has been great we tend to sleep in the no gravity position. It has been great after recovery from an illness.

Disappointed: My husband and I got the split king mattress version of this bed for our primary use. The wall glide feature is exactly why I bought this over other models. It does not work. Overpaid by 100% due to false advertising. Bed squeaks.

Of their impressive selection, we recommend the AS3 mattress. This is our favorite option because it offers a universal comfort. The AS3 is a true medium on the firmness scale and is suitable for combination sleepers, side sleepers, and back sleepers.

It is soft enough to cradle the body, but it also has the perfect level of responsiveness to prevent sinking. When the joints are cushioned and the spine is resting in a neutral position, you will be able to find deep, restorative sleep.

The layers of the AS3 do all this and more! The soft, lightweight cover helps increase circulation to prevent overheating. Plus, this cover is removable and machine washable—allowing you to care for your mattress for many years.

The AS3 comfort layer features Amersleep’s Bio-Pur® foam—a unique plant-based memory foam that doesn’t trap heat like more memory foams. Bio-Pur® is made with partially plant-based oils, rather than 100 percent petroleum-based oils. This process results in a sleep surface that is non-toxic and safe.

Beneath the Bio-Pur® layer is Amerisleep’s Affinity foam with HIVE® technology. HIVE® is designed to comfort and support each area of the body differently. Vulnerable areas like the neck and back receive more firmness and stability with HIVE®. Near areas that often develop pressure points, like the hips and shoulders, HIVE® offers a plush cushion.

The support base of the AS3 is made up of Amerisleep’s Bio-Core® foam. This solid support base prevents sinking and maintains the structure of the mattress.

Pros

  • Plant-based Bio-PurⓇ foam offers incredible breathability and fantastic responsiveness
  • Medium feel makes this a highly versatile bed
  • Bio-CoreⓇ base foam keeps this mattress going strong for a minimum of 20 years

Cons

  • Not made of entirely natural ingredients

What the testers say: “The AS3 isolated motion extremely well. I barely noticed movements when my partner changed positions or got in/out of bed at night. This helps prevent sleep disruptions for couples.” – Dr. Colleen Ehrnstrom, Ph.D., AS3 Reviewer

Like other Zoma mattresses, the Zoma Boost comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

9.5 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Zoma Boost mattress is designed to offer a medium to medium-soft feel, which is typically preferred by side sleepers. The mattress has a comfortable and supportive feel, providing a good balance between firmness and softness.

Sleepers can expect to sink slightly into the mattress’s top layer of quilted foam, which conforms to their body’s shape, providing pressure relief and reducing motion transfer.

The infused memory foam in the Zoma Boost ensures that heat is drawn away from your body while you sleep, allowing you to remain cool and comfortable all night long. It also provides superior pressure relief, helping to reduce any aching or soreness associated with poor posture or sleeping on an uneven surface.

The Zoma Boost comes highly recommended by our testers regardless of the size:

Phillip L: Excellent bed. I highly recommend. Best nights sleep in a long time.

Gene J: I’m a male that is 250lbs and a side sleeper primarily but sometimes sleep on my back. The edge support is fantastic, very good pressure relief with excellent support.

Jordan B: As a healthcare professional that recommends mattresses to people every day, this is by far my number one mattress suggestion for patients. The Zoma Boost is perfect for all sleeping styles and it’s great for keeping the spine in a neutral alignment while you sleep.

The mattress’s advanced cooling cover is made of a breathable, stretchy fabric that promotes airflow and helps to keep sleepers cool and comfortable throughout the night. It’s swift to greet sleepers with a pleasantly icy feel, like a gentle cloud embracing the body. Quilted into this cover fabric is hypersoft foam for a pillowy feel.

The mattress’s primary comfort layer is made of graphite-infused memory foam, which provides pressure relief and reduces motion transfer. The gel infusion helps to regulate temperature and prevent heat buildup, making it ideal for sleepers who tend to sleep hot.

The next layer of the mattress is made of Reactiv™, a latex-like foam that provides support and bounce. This transition layer helps to prevent sinkage and promotes proper spinal alignment.

The mattress’s bottom layer is made of pocketed coils, providing a stable foundation for the mattress and helping to prevent sagging.

Pros

  • Airy pocketed coils offer motion isolation and edge support
  • Designed to promote coolness and breathability, thanks to its graphite-infused memory foam layer and breathable cover
  • Transition foam ensures surface responsiveness

Cons

  • Mattress is only available in one firmness level & may not be suitable for all sleeping positions and preferences

What the testers say: “After a month of testing, the Zoma Boost shows no signs of impressions or sagging. The quality materials and durable construction lead me to give it a 5 out of 5 for durability. I am confident this mattress will provide consistent comfort and support for years to come.” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Zoma Boost Reviewer

  • Numerous massage modes for soothing aches and pains

Whether you prefer a hybrid or a memory foam mattress, this bundle is a great way to save on your comfort. GhostBed’s mattresses are backed by a 101-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. The base comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which you can extend the terms of for an additional cost at checkout.

Customers who buy the GhostBed adjustable bed package have used the adjustable base with several mattresses with the Venus Williams model tending to be popular. Some even have mixed and matched different Twin XL models to best suit the needs of the user. But one thing they all shared in common is after reviewing over 100 comments, everyone loved this mattress and adjustable bed combo.

Just take a look at this sample of what some people who bought this package had to say:

Heather B: We got the split king adjustable base with one flex mattress and one Venus Williams hybrid mattress. Love everything. I had back pain with my old mattress and now it’s very minimal. The flex mattress was very firm at first and took a couple of night for my body to adjust but now it’s perfect. My husband loves his mattress as well.

Tami V: We have had a queen size bed for all of our married life (over 30 years) but have had issues with mattresses and one of us getting up and sleeping in a chair, etc. due to lack of comfort. My husband did the research and we ordered the split king mattress with Venus Williams hybrid mattresses.

Joseph H: The mattress we got is great, but I think my wife is more excited about the frame. We got the split king mattress with the adjustable, massaging bases. The zero gravity is her favorite. I find that the mattress has really been great for my back.

On top, the quilted cooling cover works with a layer of cooling fiber to create a feel that’s cool to the touch. Underneath, two layers of gel-infused memory foam work to pull heat away from your body. When the heat gets pushed down to the coil layer, it’s circulated out of the mattress to keep you cool and comfortable all night.

The individually wrapped coils also work with the Ghost Bounce layer to make this mattress highly responsive as well as extremely cool. And the high-density base layer ensures maximum motion transfer control, while the reinforced coils offer the best edge support.

Meanwhile, the luxury firm feel is perfect for maintaining healthy spinal alignment for those who prefer stomach sleeping as well as relieving back and neck pain for back sleepers.

Pros

  • Presets for zero-gravity, lounging, and TV watching
  • Massage units for full-body comfort
  • Four charging USB ports for devices

Cons

  • Limited range of sizes available

Those who want a medium-firm innerspring mattress should consider the Saatva Classic’s Luxury Firm option. The Saatva Classic doesn’t just offer medium-firm support. It also fixes a lot of the problems inherent to regular innerspring mattresses. This is because the Classic is not a true innerspring mattress. It’s an innerspring hybrid!

9.2 Overall Score
  • 7 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 10 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Saatva Classic provides all the comforts you’d expect out of an innerspring mattress. It bounces just like an innerspring mattress. And it’s highly breathable all the way through, just like an innerspring mattress. So those who have gotten used to the innerspring feel don’t have to worry about losing it if they purchase the Classic.

On the other hand, you also don’t have to worry about all the problems inherent to innerspring beds when you sleep on the Classic. The adaptable pocketed coil support layer makes the Classic much more contouring than a regular innerspring mattress. It also increases the motion isolating capabilities of the bed.

Several people bought the Saatva Classic for an adjustable bed, and most people we have come across love it:

Joseph P: We are seniors and have been waking up almost every day with a sore back, hips, etc. We went the expensive route- Temur Pedic, and they were good, but not working for us. We ordered the Saatva Classic 11.5″ since we have a split king adjustable frame. From the first night we said “finally this is the one.” We do not toss and turn 15x a night to get off our sore hips, in fact we only turn 1-3 times now!

Chrisitne: I got my split king mattresses today and couldn’t be happier. This is my second review. My first one was on the outstanding customer service. The company that was used for the delivery kept me informed from the time they received the order to pick up my mattresses all the way through the delivery process! I knew everything that was going on. The two men that delivered were courteous, fast and efficient.

Carol: We own two homes and purchased the Adjustable Split King Plus Bed and two Twin XL mattresses. The White Glove Delivery was phenomenal. We didn’t have to do a thing! One of us snores and putting the bed on the snore plus elevating a little bit more solved the problem!

The Saatva Classic starts out with a three-inch contouring Euro top. This layer offers pressure relief and comfort to tired joints. It’s also wrapped in a hypoallergenic organic cotton cover treated with GuardinTM botanical antimicrobial treatment that prevents bacteria, mold, and other icky things from flourishing in your mattress. This is a boon for allergy sufferers everywhere.

Below the Euro-style pillow top, you’ll find the high-density memory foam layer. This layer increases pressure relief above and also helps the mattress transition from foam and fibers to steel coils.

The first support layer of the Classic sits right underneath the transition foam layer. These adaptable pocket coils add contoured support to the Classic to help keep your spine in optimal alignment. This is also the coil layer that helps neutralize motion transfer.

The coil layer that provides innerspring bounce and breathability is the open coil support core right below the pocketed coils. These ultra-strong coils are 13-gauge tempered steel, so you won’t have to worry about sagging for a long time.

These networked coils are also surrounded by a perimeter railing system made of high-density foam. That means the Classic mattress boasts superior edge support to go along with its dual support cores.

Pros

  • 3-inch Euro top offers tons of pressure relief to alleviate pain
  • Dual coil support cores provide innerspring bounce and hybrid adaptability
  • Three different firmness levels can accommodate multiple body types and sleep positions

Cons

  • Saatva must make a delivery appointment for the mattress and charges a return fee

The Vaya Mattress is an affordable, high-quality mattress-in-a-box brand. They are a newer company receiving positive customer feedback on Amazon. This mattress contains two hypoallergenic foam layers. Each layer is backed with a CertiPUR-US® certification, ensuring it’s low in VOCs and contains no ozone-depleting substances. If you or your spouse suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues, the Vaya Mattress is an excellent option.

The Vaya Mattress can be placed on many popular bed frames, including solid, slatted, and adjustable bases. Vaya also includes a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty with each of their mattresses.

8.7 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 7 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 8 Cooling & Breathability

The Vaya Mattress is a medium mattress—suitable for most sleep positions and body types. Beneath a lightweight cotton cover is a layer of soft, breathable foam. Vaya foam contours to the body for a weightless sleep and helps promote air circulation. This foam is also more responsive than traditional memory foam, which helps sleepers feel lifted on the mattress. This responsiveness also keeps the hips and shoulders aligned throughout the night. Supporting this soft layer is a support base of high-density foam for durability and structure.

Vaya is a bit limited on reviews, but they are mostly positive. Unfortunately, none of the reviews we looked at mentioned the split king mattress:

Leonard R: I am quite lightweight and I have been sleeping on uncomfortable memory foam before (feeling like I’m sleeping on the floor). This isn’t that same. My Vaya mattress is perfect for me.

Karen P: Very well made mattress, and I liked the idea of the hybrid. But unfortunately, it was much to firm for me. I tried to get used to it, but my hips are just too painful.

Toby S: I replaced the mattress (if you want to call it that) in my RV with yours and it was the best purchase I made! It’s a Murphy bed and unfortunately I can’t use the loveseat underneath the bed but who cares

Vaya’s proprietary Vaya Comfort Foam doesn’t retain heat and moisture the way traditional mattress foams do. This light, airy material contours to the body without causing night sweats and overheating. Plus, Vaya Foam has a slight bounce, which keeps the hips and shoulders lifted and aligned during sleep.

The pocketed spring coils in the base of the Vaya Hybrid mattress are triple wrapped in a soft, durable fabric for added comfort. These coils move independently of one another, allowing them to contour more closely to the body and relieve tension.

The perimeter of this base is also reinforced with edge support for added durability and motion isolation. Couples with different sleep schedules won’t have to worry about disturbing their partner on this stable and supportive base.

Pros

  • CertiPUR-US® certified foam minimize odds of new mattress smell
  • Balanced medium feel can cradle the body in any position
  • Base foam ensures the bed withstands years of use

Cons

  • Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other online mattresses

For hot sleepers who still need a lot of support, this firm option is one of the cooler mattresses on this list. Designed with athletic recovery in mind, the Zoma Start Mattress is the newest offering from Zoma.

Like all Zoma mattresses, the Zoma Start comes with free shipping, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10-year warranty.

9.2 Overall Score

  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

People who reviewed the Zoma Start appreciated its cooling AirCloth cover, its responsive Reactiv® foam layer, and its amazing ability to relieve pain and help sleepers wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another active day. While it’s design is budget-friendly, the Start doesn’t skimp on offering supportive comfort.

Some of the thousands surveyed on the Zoma Start had this to say:

Parth P: It is a phenomenal mattress especially for the price!

Billy K: Kind of firm waking up with shoulder pain occasionally

Xiao C: It’s of good quality overall. Came with proper packaging and easy to set up. It was a bit too soft for my back the first night, but after that I experience no back pain sleeping on it.

The Zoma Start features a 1-inch layer of gel memory foam to help wick away body heat, a 1-inch layer of Reactiv® material that offers adaptive support, and 8 inches of Support+® foam to firm up the mattress’s feel and help prevent sagging and soft spots. These foam layers are all wrapped up in a breathable AirCloth cover fabric.

Aside from staying cool at night, the durable materials inside the Zoma Start establish long-lasting motion isolation. The memory foam swallows movement at the point of impact, so if you shift positions in the night your partner sharing the bed won’t feel a thing.

The Zoma Start is also one of the top mattresses without fiberglass, a material that’s traditionally used to establish a flame-resistant bed. Fire safety is important, of course, but fiberglass has the drawback of causing skin irritation and breathing troubles if it escapes the mattress. Because of this, Zoma and many other manufacturers are moving to non-chemical alternatives for consumer safety.

Pros

  • Temperature-neutral gel foam and airy cover fabric
  • Responsive transition foam enables easy movements
  • Support foam for a healthy spine alignment

Cons

  • Simple thin mattress design means only a few special features

What the testers say: “The base layer of the Zoma Start features Support+ foam, strategically engineered to resist sagging or impressions over time. This durability factor ensures that the Zoma Start mattress design translates into years of consistent comfort and reliable performance. This factor was especially important to me, as I have raised children of mine and worked with others and I know how active they can be, even with beds.” – Dr. Nilong Vyas MD, MPH, Zoma Start Reviewer

If you want a 12-inch memory foam mattress that boasts the ultimate cooling power, say hello to the Nolah Signature 12. This mattress boasts several cooling technologies to keep even the hottest sleepers cool.

The first thing you’ll notice about this mattress is just how cool it is. It boasts multiple cooling technologies like AirFoam™ and a cooling cotton cover to both draw heat away from you and keep the cool air flowing all at once.

People are overall happy with the Nolah Signature 12. While not many mention the split king mattress  specifically, several mention pain relief, but some have mentioned it doesn’t completely alleviate their pain:

David M: Purchased signature 12. I purchased because of the high ratings for hip pressure relief. I do think the bed is very comfortable, but it is not giving me the hip pressure relief I had hoped for. One thing I would change is the bed sleeps very warm.

Kathy C: Fast shipping, but I still struggle with some pressure points as a side sleeper.

Michele C: First mattress that is just right. I fall asleep easily, sleep well, and wake up rested without the usual stiffness that comes with having osteoarthritis.

The first layer of the Signature is the plush and breathable AirFoam™ that relieves pressure and keeps the cool air flowing.

Finally, a layer of high-density core foam ensures that your mattress will stay sag and soft spot-free for many years. That’s why it sports a lifetime warranty!

As a medium mattress, the Zoma Hybrid is excellent for side and combo sleepers looking to alleviate pain. Customer reviews agree that whether you’re an athlete or not, the Zoma Hybrid mattress will cradle your body’s curves, support your back, and improve your sleep.

Most reviewers love the Zoma Hybrid including people who use the Twin XL and split king mattress models. Here is what some have to say:

Evonne B: This is my second zoma mattress. I bought a queen size a few years ago and this time I bought a king size. It’s so comfortable.

Jason D: Best mattress I’ve had to date. Took a chance on it after doing some research and really surprised. So comfortable for my preferences.

Dona F: The bed is so comfortable! My son is very tall and it’s a great fit! The delivery was fast! I’m going to purchase 2 more beds in the near future!

The bed’s top memory foam layer has infused gels for a cooler night of sleep. This layer also includes foam cutouts arranges in three support zones. Under your head, shoulders, and legs, cutouts are spaced further apart for added compression and pressure relief. However, along the back, the foam is firmer to support the lumbar spine and reduce over sinking.

A layer of Reactiv™ transitions between the bed’s comfort and support layer.  Reactiv™ is a buoyant foam that adapts to your movements, minimizing sinkage.

The hybrid contains supportive pocketed coils, with a foam base underneath for structure. Manufacturers wrap every coil in a pocketed coil system to reduce motion transfer and decrease noise. No matter how much you toss and turn, your partner should remain undisturbed.

Pros

  • Wrapped coils ensure independent reaction to movements
  • Reactiv™ buoys the body and maintains lift
  • Infused gels wick heat away from the body

Cons

  • Limited firmness options

If you and your spouse are looking for an organic split king mattress, the Avocado Green Mattress is a great choice. This bed includes organic materials that were harvested using only the most sustainable methods.

An all-latex mattress can be quite costly for sleepers who just want an eco-friendly, responsive mattress. Others may prefer the bounce that a spring mattress offers, compared to a bed with a foam base. For these shoppers, we suggest the Avocado Green, a latex hybrid mattress with targeted support features and an optional pillow top.

The Avocado Green includes a year-long sleep trial and a 25-year warranty.

The Avocado Green’s feel will vary depending on whether or not a pillow top is added on. The pillow top can soften the feel, though it will not turn it into a truly soft mattress.

Many would consider the Avocado Green with a pillow top as a medium to medium-firm mattress, feeling supportive with a touch of give under the body. Without a pillow top, the Avocado Green feels far firmer.

Avocado Green has over 90% of customers loving it, especially people who winded up buying the split king mattress option:

Elizabeth: I ordered 2 Twin XL standards for our king bed because a king would have been too heavy for us to turn. We followed instructions to unpack them and the process was easy. The 2 mattresses paired up perfectly in the frame. I needed ‘float on top’ firm and these are the perfect firmness for me.

Antionette: No more backpain when we get out of bed in the morning. Super comfortable. Only one (minor) disadvantage. We purchased the split king mattresses with pillow top. Some motion from your partner will be experienced, but not excessively.

Melissa A: Most comfortable mattress I have her slept on. Purchased split king mattress with adjustable frame and love the ability to adjust separately from my spouse.

The Avocado Green’s exact construction depends on whether a shopper chooses a pillow top or not. The pillow top adds on 2 inches of GOLS-certified latex and bringing the bed’s total cushioning layers to 5 inches.

Despite this thick amount of comfort material, the Avocado Green doesn’t feel overly squishy with a pillowtop, maintaining a comfortable supportive feel.

Next is 3 inches of latex foam, which serves as the first layer in a mattress without a pillow top. The support core consists of pocketed coils, arranged to create five zones of support under the body.

Encasing the mattress is a cover of organic cotton fabric, with underlying organic wool acting as the flame barrier. The mattress’s layers are held together by needle tufted rosettes, bypassing the need for chemical or water-based adhesives.

Pros

  • Organic cotton and organic wool are breathable
  • Latex is more buoyant than memory foam
  • Targeted support and bounciness from pocketed coils

Cons

  • Natural latex foam is heavy and raises a bed’s price

What Is a Split King Mattress?

A standard king size mattress measures 76 inches by 80 inches. Because a twin XL mattress measures 38 inches by 80 inches, it is easy to place two twin XL mattresses side by side to create a full size king bed.

Some mattress brands may not include a split king mattress in their lineup of sizes. But if they offer a twin XL option, you can simply purchase two of these and place them together to form your split king mattress. See our twin XL vs split king guide for more information and recommendations.

Why Would I Need a Split King Mattress?

Different Firmness Needs

As we mentioned above, the right firmness for one person may not be right for another. Couples often have to compromise when it comes time to purchase a new bed. But with a split king mattress, there is no compromise necessary. This option allows you both to get the perfect firmness for your body type and sleep habits.

Split King Adjustable Base

One of the best ways to improve your sleep is to upgrade to an adjustable base and mattress combo. These high-tech bed frames allow you to change the elevation of your head and legs to create a safer, more comfortable sleep position.

Some of the health benefits that come with an adjustable bed include improved circulation, less snoring, better digestion, and reduced acid reflux. Plus, an adjustable bed base offers better lumbar support and can relieve back pain. Particularly if you choose an adjustable bed for back pain with massage features.

As you shop for an adjustable base, you will notice that many of them offer a split king mattress option. When a base is split, the two sides of the bed can be raised or lowered independently. This feature gives both you and your spouse the ability to adjust your side of the bed.

Best Adjustable Beds

Hospitals have relied on adjustable beds for years. These beds ease symptoms associated with different medical issues, such as adjustable beds for seniors that make it easier to live with arthritis.

Plus, adjustable beds can facilitate a faster recovery. If you are in the market for a new adjustable base for a condition we recommend one of Amerisleep’s advanced bed frames (Read more about best mattresses for seniors here).

Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+

Amerisleep’s Adjustable Bed+ is a state-of-the-art bed frame with head and leg articulation, plus a host of other high-tech features. Pairing your new Amerisleep mattress with this adjustable base brings you a luxurious sleep.

When purchasing the Adjustable Bed+, you can bundle the frame with your preferred Amerisleep mattress. With this package, Amerisleep offers a $450 discount on the mattress.

This base has a “Flat” button and a “Snore” button on the wireless remote control. The “Flat” selection gently returns the bed to a flat position to make climbing in and out of bed easy.

The “Snore” button triggers a slight head elevation to open the airways and reduces snoring and symptoms of sleep apnea. You can use this button to reduce your spouse’s snoring without having to wake them up.

This base is also equipped with wall-glide technology to prevent the base from sliding away from the wall when raised. This feature allows you to comfortably reach objects on your nightstand with ease—even when the bed is in the fully upright position.

To help you drift off to sleep peacefully, Amerisleep has included a dual full-body massage function with three different speeds. This base also has a convenient under-bed lighting feature, USB ports, and programmable positions. You can also connect the base to your smartphone or give voice commands through your Google Home or Amazon Alexa.

The Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+ comes with a 10-year warranty. This generous warranty will ensure that your investment is protected throughout many years of use. Amerisleep will also deliver and set up the base for free

Amerisleep Adjustable Bed

Amerisleep also offers a slightly modified version of the Adjustable Bed+. This frame has the same head and leg articulation and many of the advanced features listed above but at a lower price.

The Amerisleep Adjustable Bed comes with a remote control and the option to connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Plus, it features an anti-snore button, a Zero Gravity position, and programmable sleep positions. The quiet motor will ensure you don’t wake your spouse when adjusting the bed during the night.

Unlike the Bed+, this frame does not include the massage feature, under-bed lightning, or wall-glide technology. But if you are shopping on a tight budget, this bed offers you a healthy and comfortable sleep position at an affordable price.

Amerisleep’s Adjustable Bed can be placed on the floor or any flat surface and pairs well with most bed frames. Amerisleep offers a 10-year warranty with this base to ensure it keeps supporting you for many years.

What Type of Mattress Can Be Used on an Adjustable Frame?

Most types of mattresses can be used on an adjustable base—including memory foam, latex foam, and hybrid mattresses. However, we caution pairing traditional innerspring mattresses with adjustable bases, as the springs may bend out of shape. The setup of a traditional innerspring mattress is different from a hybrid mattress, which has a pocketed coil design that adapts well with the base’s movements.

Certain air mattresses also can’t be used on an adjustable frame. These beds have a customizable air pressure system built into the mattress, allowing you to change the firmness level of the bed. But bending these mattresses on a split king adjustable bed can restrict airflow and cause damage to the mattress.

Adjustable frames also come in a variety of mattress sizes—including twin, twin XL, full, queen, and king. However, it is important to note that split adjustable beds are typically only offered in a standard king size. California king size adjustable frames are not often readily available in a split option, but they are available as a non-split adjustable base.

Most split queen adjustable bases are not attached—these bases are typically two single 30 by 80 inch bases placed side by side. However, because 30 by 80 inch mattresses are not standard, split queen adjustable beds are difficult to find.

Other Things to Consider

When shopping for your new split king mattress, there are a few things you will want to keep in mind. Bringing a new mattress home is an important decision, and you want to make the most informed choice possible. To help you select a bed suited to your needs, we breakdown the most common mattress types and firmness levels below.

Mattress Types

A mattress’s “type” is determined by the materials used within each layer. These materials can impact the comfort, quality, and support of the bed. Therefore, it is helpful to know what type of experience you will find with each different type.

Foam Mattresses

  • Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses are incredibly soft, responsive beds that hugs the curves of the body without pressure build-up. This material provides a weightless sleep so your body can repair and rebuild. Because traditional memory foam tends to trap heat, it is best to opt for a plant-based foam mattress. Plant-based foams have less heat retention and a faster response time than most memory foams. Also, because this foam is made with less petroleum-based oils, it is also safer and less toxic.
  • Latex Foam: Latex is a highly durable and naturally sustainable material that has become a popular mattress material. This foam has more elastic properties than memory foam, so while it does contour, it has a bounce that keeps you lifted rather than cradled. If you prefer the comfort of foam but also want more bounce, you may find a latex foam mattress more comfortable.

Hybrid Mattress

As its name suggests, a hybrid mattress is a combination of foam and innerspring coils. These beds typically feature a 2 to 3 inch foam comfort layer—made of either memory or latex foam. Supporting this layer is a base of individually wrapped spring coils.

In some hybrid mattresses, coils are tuned to provide the ideal comfort level for each area of the body—so they are softer near the hips and shoulders and firmer near the head, back, and neck.

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring mattresses have been popular for many years—this is mainly due to their low price point. However, these beds are quickly falling out of favor as people switch to more advanced foam and hybrid mattresses.

Innerspring beds have a support base of spring coils, but they do not have the plush comfort layer of foam that contours to the body. Some innerspring beds feature foam in their comfort layer, but it is usually less than 1 inch. Plus, spring coils can become damaged quickly and may stick up—resulting in painful pressure points.

Firmness and Sleeping Positions

You may not give much thought to the position you sleep in each night, but your sleep habits can affect what type of bed you find most comfortable.

Depending on your position in bed, certain parts of your body will sink more than others. It’s important that sinking is controlled so the spine stays in alignment with the rest of your body. If the spine is out of alignment, it can cause pain and stiffness in the morning.

Below are the most common sleep positions and the firmness level most suitable for each.

  • Side Sleeping: A medium-soft to medium mattress will cushion the heaviest parts of the body (the hips and shoulders), while also preventing excessive sinking, so the spine stays straight.
  • Back Sleeping: A medium to medium-firm mattress will keep body weight evenly distributed and prevent the hips from sinking and throwing the spine out of alignment.
  • Stomach Sleeping: A medium-firm to firm mattress will prevent the hips from sinking and putting a strain on the upper back and neck.
  • Combination Sleeping: A medium mattress will provide enough cushioning for resting on your side, and also enough firmness to prevent the hips from sinking when back or stomach sleeping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a split king mattress the same as two twin XLs?

Yes. The dimensions of two twin XLs placed side by side equal those of a king size mattress. Couples with different sleep styles and those with split king adjustable beds love split king mattresses for the extra sleep-promoting benefits they provide.

How much does a split king mattress cost?

Split king mattresses cost more than standard kings or even California kings because they are two separate mattresses, so they require a bit more material to make, resulting in an increased price. On average, a split king mattress will cost between $2,000 and $3,000 because you’re buying two separate twin XL beds instead of one mattress.

Is a split king adjustable bed worth it?

We believe adjustable beds are always worth the investment as long as you’re choosing one that’s a good value. Some adjustable beds have very expensive prices but don’t contain all that many bells and whistles. When searching for a good adjustable bed, look at the price, and then look at what it comes with. If you think you’re being price gauged, try shopping with another brand. Trust us, there are plenty of great adjustable beds out there and they don’t cost an arm and a leg.

What is the best split king mattress?

It depends on who you ask! Everybody has different sleep needs, so your best friend’s favorite mattress probably differs from your mom or dad’s favorite mattress, so on and so forth. To find your best mattress, think about how you sleep, how soft or firm you prefer your bed to be, and body type. With those three things in mind, you can find a comfortable bed in no time.

Do adjustable beds ruin mattresses?

As long as the mattress in question is compatible with an adjustable bed, it should be just fine to pair with an adjustable bed frame. Adjustable beds rarely ever damage all-foam mattresses, and most hybrids pair well with them, too. The only beds to really question are innersprings—beds with coils are hit or miss with adjustable bases. Before pairing an innerspring mattress with an adjustable base, reach out to the retailer and ask if the mattress you’re considering is compatible with an adjustable bed.

Conclusion

The great thing about a split king mattress is that you and your spouse don’t have to compromise on comfort when it comes to a mattress for couples. Sleep is valuable, and we want to make the most out of every minute of rest. Unfortunately, it can be hard to do that when we are sleeping on a mattress that is wrong for our body type and sleep position.

If you and your spouse are looking for a good night’s sleep, a split king mattress is the perfect solution. Better yet, you can pair your new split king mattress with an adjustable bed frame and experience even more restorative sleep.

      Hi Charles,

Thanks for your comment! If you’re looking for a mattress and adjustable bed frame, we’d recommend looking at Amerisleep and their sleep products.

They have two adjustable bed frames—one is a little more high-tech than the other but both are great for alleviating sleep troubles and improving comfort—and five different memory foam mattresses that pair well with their base. Amerisleep’s mattresses are all CertiPUR-US® certified, backed by a 20-year warranty, and come with free shipping, and they’re even offering discounts on both their bases and mattresses right now. Prices can range depending on the base and mattress you choose, but they range from $3000 to $5000 (for both products).

For a more in-depth recommendation, we suggest reaching out to Amerisleep directly since they’ll be able to help you choose between bases and provide you with a mattress recommendation.
